One of the most popular clematis it is covered in an abundance of impressive large 13.0cm to 20.0cm, rich violet-blue flowers with pinkish-white filaments and red anthers. Some of the early flowers on the previous years growth can be semi-double.

Raised by Charles Noble of the UK and introduced around 1876 it has received the Royal horticultural Society 'Award of Garden Merit'
